Photography lighting
Photography lighting is the practice of reading and shaping the light that falls on your subject. Four qualities decide what any light does: its direction, its size relative to the subject, its distance, and its color. Learn to judge those four before you raise the camera and every lighting decision, from a bare window to a full studio, becomes a choice instead of a gamble. This guide teaches them in curriculum order, starting with one window.

Seeing light
A camera does not photograph objects. It photographs the light coming off them. That sounds like a slogan until you act on it: the fastest way to improve your lighting is not to buy a light, it is to spend two weeks learning to see the light you already live in.
Every light source you will ever use, from the sun to a desk lamp to a studio strobe, can be described with four qualities. Learn to name them and you can predict a photograph before you make it.
Direction. Where is the light coming from relative to your subject and your camera? Front light (the light behind you, falling flat on the subject) hides texture and depth. Side light rakes across the subject and reveals shape, texture, and dimension. Back light separates the subject from the background and draws a bright edge around it. None of these is wrong; each is a different sentence about the same subject.
Size. The size of the light source, relative to the subject and as the subject sees it, controls how hard or soft the shadows are. A big source wraps light around the subject and paints shadow edges as gradual transitions. A small source cuts shadows with a hard edge. This single relationship explains most of what you will read in chapter three.
Distance. Light falls off as it travels. Move a lamp twice as far from your subject and the light on them drops to roughly a quarter of what it was, not half: falloff follows the inverse square law. In practice this means distance is a creative control. A light close to the subject makes the background fall into darkness; the same light pulled far back flattens the difference between subject and background.
Color. Light has a color temperature, measured in kelvin. Candlelight and tungsten bulbs sit warm, around 2,000 to 3,200K. Midday sun sits near 5,500K. Open shade and overcast skies drift cool and blue, around 6,500 to 7,500K [VERIFY exact ranges against a standard reference before publish]. Your eye corrects for this constantly; your camera records it honestly. Learning to notice color before the camera does is a core skill, and it connects directly to the white balance work in photography basics.
One more distinction keeps beginners out of a common trap: quantity and quality are different axes. Quantity is how much light there is, and your exposure controls answer it; a dim room is an exposure problem, not a lighting problem. Quality is everything above: direction, size, distance, color. A bright scene can be lit badly and a dim one beautifully. When a photograph disappoints, diagnose quality first. Most fixes are a step to the left, a subject turned ten degrees, or an hour's patience, not a brighter light.
Here is the exercise this chapter asks of you, and it costs nothing. For one week, three times a day, stop and answer four questions about the light where you stand: where is it coming from, how big is the source, how fast does it fall off, and what color is it? Do it at breakfast, at midday, and in the evening. You are building the habit every working photographer runs silently, all day, without a camera in hand.
Window light
One window is a complete lighting education. It is also, for most photographs of people, the most flattering light in your house. A window is a large source (chapter one: large means soft), it is directional, and you control everything about it by moving your subject, not the light.
Start with the window itself. A window that receives no direct sun gives you steady, soft, even light for hours; in the northern hemisphere that is typically a north-facing window [VERIFY: hemisphere phrasing reads correctly for a US audience]. Direct sun through glass behaves like the sun outside: hard, contrasty, and moving. Both are useful. Learn the soft version first.
Place the subject, then the camera. Put your subject close to the window, angled so the light strikes them from about 45 degrees to one side. Stand with your back near the window edge, between the light and the subject, and shoot across the lit side. You now have the same setup portrait studios charge for: a large directional source, a lit side, and a shadow side that gives the face shape.
Work the distance. Light from a window falls off fast. A subject one step from the glass glows against a room that falls into shadow; a subject across the room sits in dim, even light with the window as a background problem. Move your subject through that range once and watch what the falloff does to the mood of the frame. This is the inverse square law from chapter one, now visible.
Control the quality. A sheer white curtain turns direct sun through a window into a soft, luminous source: the curtain becomes the light, and it is enormous relative to a face. A piece of white foam board or a white wall opposite the window bounces light back into the shadow side when the contrast runs too deep. That board is the cheapest and most-used light modifier in photography.
Turn the subject, not the light. From one window position you can produce flat light (subject facing the window), classic portrait light (subject at 45 degrees), split light (subject at 90 degrees, half the face lit), and rim light (subject backlit against the window, exposure held for the bright edge). The window never moved. That is the lesson that transfers to every light you will ever own.
Three mistakes account for most disappointing window portraits. Standing the subject flat against the wall beside the window, where the light skims past them instead of striking them: bring them off the wall and into the light's path. Shooting from the dark side of the subject so the camera sees mostly shadow: cross to the window side unless you want that drama on purpose. And leaving a lamp burning in the frame, which plants an orange cast in a daylight scene: one source, one color, as always.
Practice: one person, one window, twenty minutes, four positions from the paragraph above. Keep the frames. They become your reference for every lighting pattern named in chapter four.
Hard light and soft light
Look at the edge of a shadow. That edge is the whole subject of this chapter.
A shadow with a crisp, immediate edge means hard light. A shadow that dissolves gradually from dark to lit means soft light. Neither is a quality grade. Hard and soft are tools, and the photographers you admire chose one on purpose in nearly every frame you have studied.
What makes light hard or soft is apparent size. Not brightness, not distance alone, not the price of the equipment: the size of the source as seen from the subject. The sun is the largest object in the sky and it produces the hardest light in ordinary life, because at that distance it reads as a tiny disc. Slide a cloud in front of it and the entire sky becomes the source: the same sun now produces shadowless, wraparound light. You did not change the light. You changed its apparent size.
This is why every softening tool in photography is really an enlarging tool. A softbox, an umbrella, a sheer curtain, a white ceiling you bounce into: each takes a small source and spreads it across a larger surface before it reaches the subject. Once you see modifiers this way, gear stops being mysterious. The question is never which brand; it is how large, and how close.
When to reach for hard light. Hard light states texture: skin, stone, fabric, weather. It builds graphic frames with strong shadow shapes, and it carries drama and honesty. Street photography at noon, athletic portraits, product shots that need edges to bite: hard light earns its keep.
When to reach for soft light. Soft light flatters and forgives. It smooths skin, opens shadows, and lets expression carry the frame instead of contrast. Portraits of anyone who has not asked to look weathered, food, gentle documentary work indoors: start soft.
Distance changes softness too, and in the direction beginners do not expect. Bringing a light closer to the subject makes it larger from the subject's point of view, so closer means softer, not harsher. A softbox one arm's length from a face is a gentle giant; the same softbox across the room is a bright little rectangle throwing hard-edged shadows. The cost of closeness is faster falloff across the subject, chapter one's inverse square law again, so a close source lights one cheek noticeably brighter than the other. Softness and evenness pull against each other, and choosing between them is a real decision, not a defect.
The working test. Before you shoot, hold your hand out in the light and look at the shadow it throws. Crisp edge, hard light; smudged edge, soft light; no shadow to speak of, very soft light. That five-second check tells you what the light will do to a face before the face is in front of you.
Contrast is a related but separate control: it describes how dark the shadows fall, and you adjust it by filling them (the foam board from chapter two) without changing the shadow edge at all. Hard versus soft is the edge; fill is the depth. Photographers who keep those two ideas separate light with intention. The judgment of which to use, and when to break the flattering default, is compositional taste as much as technique, and it is trained the same way: deliberately. The composition pillar picks up that thread.
One-light portraits
Everything so far transfers directly the day you pick up your first light, and this chapter is deliberately agnostic about what that light is: a speedlight, a small LED panel, or the window from chapter two. The patterns below are positions, not products.
A portrait lighting pattern is just a name for where the main light sits relative to the face. Four names cover a century of portraiture.
Split light. The light at 90 degrees to the side: half the face lit, half in shadow. Stark, graphic, and more dramatic than most subjects want, but the clearest place to start because you can see exactly what the light is doing.
Loop light. Move the light from split toward the camera until the nose casts a small loop-shaped shadow angling down toward the corner of the mouth. Lifted slightly above eye level, this is the workhorse: dimensional but friendly, and it suits most faces.
Rembrandt light. Keep moving until the nose shadow and the cheek shadow meet, leaving a small triangle of light on the shadowed cheek, just under the eye. Named for the painter who kept using it [VERIFY the naming claim's phrasing against a standard portrait lighting reference]. Moodier than loop, still natural, and the pattern most people mean when they say dramatic portrait light.
Butterfly light. The light directly in front of the face and raised, throwing a small symmetrical shadow under the nose. A classic Hollywood glamour pattern that emphasizes cheekbones and demands a face comfortable with symmetry.
Two refinements turn patterns into craft. Short versus broad: turn the subject so the lit side of the face is the one angled away from camera (short lighting) and the face slims and gains depth; light the near side (broad lighting) and it widens. Feathering: aim the edge of your light at the subject rather than its center, and the quality sweetens while spill on the background drops.
The second decision in every one-light portrait is what happens to the shadow side, and you make it without a second light. A white reflector or wall bounced in close lifts the shadows toward gentle (low contrast); taking the reflector away lets them fall dark (high contrast); and a piece of black foam board on the shadow side actively deepens them, a technique called negative fill that gives daylight portraits a carved, editorial look. Same light, three completely different photographs. Decide contrast on purpose before you press the shutter, because it is the part of the frame retouching handles worst.
Watch the eyes while you work. A catchlight, the small reflection of the source in the eye, keeps a portrait alive; when the eyes go dead black the light has drifted too high or too far to the side.
Exposure decisions run underneath all of this: the aperture you choose sets how much of that shaped light reaches the sensor and how the background renders behind it. Natural light indoors
Most of the photographs you will make this year happen indoors, in rooms you did not light. The skill is hunting: finding the one place in an ordinary room where the light is already good, and having the discipline to move people three steps into it.
Walk the room before you shoot the room. Light indoors is wildly uneven. Stand in the doorway and read the room with chapter one's four questions: where does light enter, how big are those openings, how fast does it die crossing the room, and what color is it? The best light in a house is usually within two steps of a window or an open exterior door, and the difference between that spot and the middle of the room is the difference between a photograph and a snapshot.
Doorways are softboxes. An open exterior door in shade throws a tall column of soft, directional light. Place a subject just inside it, facing out, and the room behind them falls away dark. This one setup produces portraits that look deliberately lit, from nothing.
Kill the overheads. Mixed lighting is the silent killer of indoor photographs: cool daylight from the window, warm tungsten or drifting LED from the ceiling, and skin that renders green or half-orange no white balance can honestly fix. When daylight is doing the work, turn the room lights off. One source, one color, clean skin.
Use the walls. A white wall opposite a window is a built-in fill card. A dim hallway with light entering from one end is a ready-made falloff study. Bathrooms with a single frosted window are famously kind portrait spaces, and garages with the door up give you a huge, soft, directional opening [VERIFY: attribute or soften the word famously].
Underexpose for the light, not the room. Indoor scenes tempt the meter to brighten everything until the mood is gone. Expose for the lit side of the subject and let the room go dark around them. The dark is not a mistake; it is what makes the light in the frame read as light.
Practice for this chapter: pick one room in your home at three different times of day and photograph the same small object in the best light you can find each time, without moving a single lamp. You will end up with a private map of your own house's light, and the habit of hunting before shooting will follow you into every space you ever photograph in.
Where you stand and where you place the subject inside that found light is composition doing its half of the work; the composition pillar covers that judgment. Lighting finds the stage, composition blocks the scene.
Golden hour
Golden hour is the stretch after sunrise and before sunset when the sun sits low, roughly the first and last hour of direct sun in the day, though its true length swings with season and latitude [VERIFY the definition's phrasing; the commonly cited solar-elevation figure should be checked before publish]. Everything this guide has taught converges in it, which is why it closes the curriculum.
Low sun changes all four qualities from chapter one at once. Direction: the light comes from beside your subject instead of above, so faces and landscapes take side light and long shadows without you doing anything. Size and quality: sunlight travels through far more atmosphere near the horizon, which scatters and softens it; the same sun that cut hard shadows at noon now wraps gently. Color: that same scattering strips the blue, and the light lands warm, gold through amber. Distance stays cosmic, but falloff shows up as the fast fade of the day itself: the light changes minute to minute, and golden hour rewards photographers who arrive early and work fast.
Three ways to point yourself, and they produce three different photographs:
Front-lit. Sun behind you, subject glowing warm and evenly. The easiest exposure of the day and the most forgiving portrait light outdoors. Watch for squinting; turn the subject a few degrees off the sun line.
Side-lit. Sun raking across the scene. Texture, long shadows, and dimension: the landscape photographer's default at this hour, and the reason the same field looks flat at noon and sculpted at seven.
Back-lit. Sun behind the subject, drawing a bright rim through hair and grass. Expose for the subject's face and let the background bloom bright; hide the sun's disc just behind a head or a tree line to keep flare in check, or let a little flare in on purpose. This is the golden hour photograph most people are chasing.
Backlight is also where meters give up, so take the exposure yourself. A camera left to average the scene sees all that bright sky and buries your subject in silhouette. Spot meter on the face, or dial in positive exposure compensation until skin renders true and let the highlights go where they go. If the shadows on the face run too deep, the chapter two reflector earns its place outdoors: a bounce from below the frame turns harsh backlight into a lit portrait. And if the silhouette is the photograph you want, expose for the sky instead and let the figure go black on purpose.
Plan it like an appointment. The window is short, the sun's position is knowable to the minute with any sun-tracking app, and the location you scouted at noon is a different place at that hour. When the sun drops below the horizon, stay: the blue hour that follows trades warmth for a soft, even, cobalt light that suits cityscapes and quiet portraits.
